This friendly family runs a small farm in the mountains of south-east Galicia. They are restoring the property and working to rebuild the surrounding village, a project that has become a little too much for the family of six to manage alone. They welcome volunteers who enjoy rural life, practical work, good humour, music and being outdoors.
Tasks & Roles
There is a wide range of work to get involved with, and tasks can be adapted to suit a volunteer’s interests and skills. Help may include caring for the many farm animals, including sheep, goats, cows, horses, chickens, ducks, geese and quails. Other work includes fencing, cutting back brambles, shaping the land, managing water flow, cleaning water reserves, turning fallen trees into firewood and carrying out general farm and renovation tasks.
The family are experienced farmers, builders and self-taught craftspeople, so volunteers can learn a variety of practical skills. They are also happy to learn from volunteers and share their own knowledge and experience.
Living & Getting There
As the buildings are still being renovated, accommodation is currently provided in a large four-person tent and a smaller tent. The closest international airport is Santiago–Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ). Pick-up can be arranged from As Nogais, Becerreá or Pedrafita.
What else
The family has hosted many volunteers and enjoys creating a relaxed environment where people can work, learn and share experiences. Life on the farm can be unpredictable, and some animal care continues even during rainy weather. There is also plenty of time to relax, chat, laugh and enjoy a cup of tea together. A dog and several cats are also part of the farm community.
