Live in a Château near Paris and Help in the Garden

Live in a Château near Paris (France)

This opportunity offers the chance to live in a Château near Paris while helping care for a historic French property and its gardens. Château de Sacy is an 18th-century family home located around 65 km north of Paris. The château has been in the same family for around two centuries and now hosts arts retreats and artist residencies.

International volunteers are invited to help prepare the house and grounds for the retreat season. The experience combines practical work, cultural exchange and a relaxed communal lifestyle. Volunteers have their own private room in the château and share the experience with a small group of up to six people.

Tasks & Roles

Volunteers help for around four to five hours a day, six days a week, generally working for two hours in the morning and another two hours in the afternoon. The tasks vary depending on the season and the needs of the property.

Garden work can include weeding, pruning, trimming and general maintenance. Volunteers may also help care for the formal and kitchen gardens, orchard and small woodland, covering around one hectare in total. Indoor tasks include painting walls and fences, cleaning windows and carrying out general household upkeep.

People with practical experience may also have opportunities to assist with carpentry, painting, building and the refurbishment of rooms and outbuildings. Other activities can include preparing meals for retreats, making jam, learning French cooking and helping with general preparations around the château.

The group shares daily life, including taking turns to prepare meals. Volunteers may also cycle to a nearby farm to collect fresh milk and eggs, adding to the experience of living and working in a rural French setting.

Living & Getting There

Volunteers have their own private bedroom inside the château. Each room has its own character, while shared living spaces provide opportunities to socialise with the other volunteers and hosts.

The closest major airport is Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), approximately 49 km away. The easiest route is usually to take a train from Paris Gare du Nord to Pont-Sainte-Maxence, where the hosts can collect volunteers. The journey takes around 35 minutes from Gare du Nord, which is also the Eurostar station.

Alternatively, volunteers can fly into Paris Beauvais Airport (BVA) and continue by Uber. Those arriving at CDG can take a train into Paris before continuing to Pont-Sainte-Maxence. The château is around 7 km from the train station.

What else

The château provides an opportunity to experience peaceful rural life while remaining within easy reach of Paris. During their free time, volunteers can use the bicycles provided or take the train to explore the surrounding area.

Nearby attractions include the historic Châteaux of Chantilly, Pierrefonds and Compiègne, along with First World War sites and ancient Roman landmarks. There is also a nearby lake where volunteers can go swimming.

Those who prefer to stay at the château can relax in the grounds or enjoy French billiards, piano and table tennis. They can also practise their French or English and learn more about French cooking and sustainable living.

For anyone who wants to live in a Château near Paris, this experience combines hands-on work, cultural exchange and the opportunity to become part of daily life in a historic French home.
